To assess three of the five NEO-Dimensions (neuroticism, with the facets: anxiety, hostility, depression, and vulnerability, extraversion with the facets: assertiveness, gregariousness, positive emotions, and activity, and openness to experience with the facets: fantasy, ideas, feelings, aesthetics, and actions), 18 items were selected from the NEO-FFI (Costa & McCrae, 1985); six items for each dimension. Responses were given on a five-point Likert-Scale (5 rated as "applies very well to me", 1 rated as "does not apply to me at all"). Some of the items were modified slightly for the use with a representative sample of older adults (e.g., as in item 2, double-negatives were avoided). Item 3 was recoded (r) so that higher scores on every item indicate higher neuroticism, extraversion and openness.
